Red Rock Rampage
Green Valley Race Loop, St. George. March 5, 2011

The temperature was in the low 60s with high thin clouds. The Green Valley race course was in great shape for a fast race. 43 riders represented UMB at this well-attended race. Team members Carter Green and Casey Zaugg posted first-place finishes, with Jacey Messer, Rachel Hutchings, and Jared Muir taking 2nd in their race categories.

Cholla Challenge
Warner Valley Race Loop, Hurricane. April 2, 2011

There was light cloud cover and gentle breeze as the 2011 Cholla Challenge got underway. The trail was dry and a little loose. 33 riders raced for the UMB team, grabbing the team win with strong performances across many categories. First place finishers for UMB were Travis Millward, Ian Beaty, Casey Zaugg, and Mark Messer, with second places going to Garrett Hays, Rachel Hutchings, and Richard Ewell.

Showdown at Five Mile Pass
Five Mile Pass, west of Lehi.  May 7, 2011

It was perfect racing weather at Five Mile Pass as the UMB team took its lead into the 3rd Intermountain Cup race of the year. Sunny, warm but not hot, with just a little breeze. The trail was well ridden-in, with plenty of dust to soften the grip of the tires and fill the lungs. The team had a good showing with representation in most categories. Michael Buhler had our only 1st place finish, but there were strong 2nd place finishes by Shawn Nielsen, Aaron Johnson, Seth Hejny, Mike Horne, Richard Ewell, Sally Reynders, and Joel Quinn.

Sundance Spin
Sundance Resort, North Fork, Provo Canyon. May 14, 2011
(Rescheduled for Soldier Hollow due to heavy snows)

The Sundance Solder Hollow race was fun but painful. The new clockwise course was satisfyingly brutal, and the trail was in great condition (except for the mud-bog right at the start and finish). Concerns about the new singletrack disappeared as racers discovered that the sketchy areas on the new stuff had been lovingly shoveled and bermed. After a few threatening early-morning clouds retreated, the weather was perfect for racing. Congrats to Nate Drozd who took 1st place, and to Coleman Cowan, Richard Ewell, and Mark Messer who grabbed 2nds.

Hammerfest at the Hollow
Soldier Hollow, Midway.  May 21, 2011

The rains let up just in time for the upper Soldier Hollow trails to get solid, but there was enough mud to go around down in the meadow. The UMB team was represented by 22 racers at the Hammerfest. We had first place wins by Michael Buhler, Joel Quinn, and Casey Zaugg, with 2nd-place finishes by Aaron Johnson, Rachel Hutchings, Ian Beaty, Mike Horne, and Mark Messer. Despite a nice effort, UMB drops to 2nd in the season standings as Mad Dog again scores big points.

Stan Crane Memorial
Draper, Monday May 30 (Memorial Day), 2011

On a wet and cold Memorial Day Monday morning, 29 UMB team members showed up to race on the Corner Canyon trails for the 6th ICup race of the season. It was 38 degrees during registration, with occasional fine rain. The trails were thoroughly soaked but held up well, with only occasional mud-bogs. UMB had first place finishes by Michael Buhler, Rachel Hutchings, Richard Ewell, and Joel Quinn, with 2nd places by Jonathan Hall and Jay Griffin.

Deer Valley Pedalfest
Deer Valley, June 11, 2011

With a record-setting late snow melt, the Deer Valley Pedalfest underwent a minor trail re-route to avoid snow on the upper slopes of Deer Crest. But the shorter loop was dry and in great condition. The only mud was just uphill from the start line, where a large snowbank was feeding the sloppy slope below. UMB saw some great individual efforts. Rachel Hutchings took 1st place. UMB had 2nd-place finishes by Mark Messer, Joel Quinn, Ian Beaty, and Richard Ewell.

Wimmer's Race at Sherwood
Sherwood Hills, Logan, June 18, 2011

This was the best ICup race at Sherwood Hills ever, and probably the finest race so far in the 2011 ICup series. The trail was sooo nice, the trees and flowers were pretty, and the temperature was absolutely perfect. Michael Buhler and Joel Quinn got 1st place wins in this race. The UMB team had 2nd-place finishes by Ian Beaty, Denmark Jensen, and Jason Sparks.

"Snowbird" Mountain Bout
Held at Dutch Hollow, Midway, July 2, 2011

Because Snowbird was still buried under this past winter's heavy snow, the Mountain Bout was moved to the trail system at Dutch Hollow. A fun 7.5-mile loop featured creek dips and twisting tight singletrack in the trees. Fun stuff under sunny skies. UMB had first-place finishes by Darren Stirland, Denmark Jensen, Jay Griffin, and Joel Quinn. Second-place winners were Aaron Johnson and Ian Beaty.

Solitude
Solitude Resort, Big Cottonwood Canyon, July 23, 2011

The trails at Solitude Resort were in great shape -- smoothed and bermed in time for the 10th Intermountain Cup race of the season. UMB put 41 racers on the race loop to come away with a team victory. First-place winners were Michael Buhler, John Higgins, Jay Griffin, and Joel Quinn, while Rachel Hutchings, Cat Kalwies, Denmark Jensen, and Richard Ewell took 2nd in their categories.

Basin Bash XC 
Snowbasin, Ogden Canyon, July 30, 2011

A light cloud cover kept the morning cool as racers flew around Snowbasin's excellent trail system. In the final race of the season, UMB outscored Mad Dog, but not by enough to take the season championship. First-place winners at the Snowbasin race were Rachel Hutchings and Joel Quinn. Seth Hejny, Jason Sparks, and Richard Ewell were our second-place finishers.

2011 Season Trailwork

Our main workday was clearing a trail bypass on Deer Creek South Fork, routing around that chronically swampy area. The team combined for over 200 hours of trail work.

2011 Senior Games
Jay, Joel, and Bruce represented UMB at the Huntsman World Senior Games on October 10 and 11.
