Basin Bash XC - Season Finale - Saturday July 30, 2011

A light cloud cover kept the morning cool as racers flew around Snowbasin's excellent trail system. In the final race of the season, UMB outscored Mad Dog -- but fell short of the season championship. The riding was fun, with a combination of smooth swooping singletrack and rocky challenging rough stuff. First-place winners at the Snowbasin race were Rachel Hutchings and Joel Quinn. Seth Hejny, Jason Sparks, and Richard Ewell were our second-place finishers.

Left:  Nearing the end of the eight-mile loop, Dan hits a hairpin turn while Paul follows behind.

Category 9-and-under:

Left:   On the 9-and-under loop, Coleman Cowan sprints
past an elderberry bush on the way to the 4th place in his
racing category.

Right:   Jacey Messer cranks on grassy ski slope on
her third lap as she takes 5th place in the 9-and-under
category. From here, it's tough 200 yards of gravel uphill
doubletrack to finish the race.

Sydney Nielsen coasts downhill through
the tall grass, finishing with 7th place
in the 9-and-under group.

Carson Taylor cranks uphill toward
the finish line and an 8th place spot.
He's bouncing through the rocky spot.

In his first mountain bike race, Josh
gets the 9th place finish.
Congrats, Josh, and welcome to the team!

Category 10-12:

Dylan Payne pivots a turn near the
end of the five-mile short lap, taking
a podium spot with 3rd place.

Cranking up the hill toward the
finish line, Baylor Payne grabs team
points with the 7th place spot.

Brayden Jacob finishes the long hard
race loop with the 8th place finish
in the 10-12 category.

So close. Soooo close. The UtahMountainBiking team came within a few points of winning the 2011 Intermountain Cup championship. Congratulations to an excellent Mad Dog racing team; good sports and friendly adversaries.
This season was great fun. Hard to believe it's over already. Time to move on to Endurance races and then Cyclocross. By the way, the next ICup race is March 3, 2012. Be ready!
