Deer Valley Pedalfest
Deer Valley Resort, Saturday June 11, 2011
State Championship, USA Cycling Nationals qualifier

With a record-setting late snow melt, the Deer Valley Pedalfest underwent a minor trail re-route to avoid snow on the upper slopes of Deer Crest. But the shorter loop was dry and in great condition. The only mud was just uphill from the start line, where a large snowbank was feeding the sloppy slope below. UMB saw some great individual efforts. Rachel Hutchings took 1st place. UMB had 2nd-place finishes by Mark Messer, Joel Quinn, Ian Beaty, and Richard Ewell.

Left:  Snow clings to the ski slopes above the race staging area.

Category 9-and-under:
Left:  On the 9-and-under course,  Hattie Ransom
makes a tight turn on the zigzag downhill, finishing
top among the young UMB racers with 7th place.

Right:  Sawyer Ransom tilts into the turn on his second lap,
taking the 9th place finish in the category.

Left:  Speeding down the ski slope, Sydney Nielsen
gets the 10th place finish.

Right:  Making his first race ever, Pierce Ransom pedals
his small-wheeler toward the finish line and a 12th place
position. Happy Birthday, Pierce! You're now old enough
to race.

Category 10-12:
Left:   Hunter Ransom tips hard around a corner in the
downhill slalom course near the finish line, taking the
7th place spot in the 10-12 category.

Right:   The kids' race started at 8 am in the
early morning chill. Here the 10-12 category
romps on the pedals as they sprint away
from the start line.

and the zigzag descent to the finish line. Adam gets the
6th place ribbon in Beginner Men 40-plus.

Right:   Mark leads a charge of 40-plus expert
racers up the steep shakeout pitch just
uphill from the starting line.

Beginner Women:
Left:   At the front of the Beginner Women group,

the long flat past The Gap, securing the 2nd place spot
on the podium.

Right:  Looking north from the race loop.
With the late arrival of warm weather, the
aspens are just beginning to get leaves.
Snow still covers slopes that are usually
open for mountain biking in June.

of his first lap, taking the 8th place spot in Sport Men 30-34.

from a leaky rear tire.  Sympathy, but no mercy,
as Joel pedals on by.

hustles along the rail fence before dropping down to the

his first lap. Two more to go for the
9th place spot in the category.

Carving a turn around the course ribbon
near the end of the lap, Mike Engberson

the candles on his birthday cupcake.

Left:  Richard Ewell flies across the meadow
toward the start/finish area as he takes the
2nd place finish in Clydesdale.

Right:   The Men 57-plus category is very good about sticking
around to get their award ribbons. It makes a better photo
when there are no blank spaces on the podium. Yeah. That's it
It's certainly NOT favoritism by the guy who puts the web
page together.

stretch as he finishes his 2nd lap,
taking 2nd place in Men 57-plus

Bruce Argyle drops off the mountain
into the finishing area, staying just ahead
of the competition to nail 4th place.

Hitting the hard turns descending
to the finish line, Gene Poncelet
grabs the 8th place finish.

UMB had 30 racers at Deer Valley. It was a big race, as it was the State Championship and a qualifier for the USAC nationals. The weather and trail conditions were better than expected, and the day turned out great -- for most of us. The team had four riders who weren't able to complete the race. With only four races to go, it's going to be a close fight for the team season championship.

season flowers that were blooming along
