Sherwood Hills
Logan, Saturday June 18, 2011

This was the best ICup race at Sherwood Hills ever, and probably the finest race so far in the 2011 ICup series. The trail was sooo nice, the trees and flowers were pretty, and the temperature was absolutely perfect. Michael Buhler and Joel Quinn got 1st place wins in this race. The UMB team had 2nd-place finishes by Ian Beaty, Denmark Jensen, and Jason Sparks. But the twisting singletrack through the trees was its own reward.

Left:  Jason fights to keep position on Mark as they zoom through the maples on their third lap of the race.

Category 9-and-under:
Left:   Jacey Messer sprints past the mules ear
flowers as the 9-and-under race begins. Jacey
has a great race, taking the 4th place finish overall.

Right:  The 9-and-under loop was the shakeout loop
for the other racing categories. Here Coleman Cowan hits
a downhill on his way to the 13th place position.

Category 10-12:  UMB had no 10-12 riders!

Beginner 13-15:  UMB had no Beginner 13-15 riders at Sherwood Hills!

Beginner 16-18:   UMB had no Beginner 16-18 riders!

Beginner 19-29:

Left:   Michael Buhler turns to hit the brutal
uphill section at the start of his second lap,
taking a 1st place ribbon in Beginner Men.

Right:   Christian's friend Matt is preparing
pulled pork, which will be the main course
for the team's after-race picnic. Note the
many sauce options. Wow, was it ever

Beginner 30-39:

Left:    Wayne Baker cranks uphill through the maples
at the start of his second lap. Wayne finishes with
team points and the 5th place finish in Beginner Men

Right:    Adam Little pedals toward the lap/finish split
as he also grabs a point for the team with the 7th
place spot in the category.

In his first race for the UMB team,
Eric Jensen
 cranks it home with positive
attitude and the 9th place position.

Christian Burrell fires down the final
stretch to take the 10th place spot
in Beginner Men 30-39.

Heading into the end of the first lap,
Jeremy Pierson
gets a bit of downhill.
Jeremy takes the 11th place finish.

Beginner 40-plus:

heads out into the shakeout loop,
Adam Reynders pedals through the
blooming mules ear, taking the 5th place

Right:   The team gets psyched in the early
morning cool before the 1st race. From left,

Sport Men 30-34:    UMB had no Sport Men 30-34 racers at Sherwood Hills!

Sport Men 35-39:

Mike Horne raced in the Sport Men 35-39 group. Last we saw of him, he and his bike were being transported by ATV back toward the parking lot. Rumor is, the bike was the injured party. Mike didn't make it around to where our photographers were patiently waiting, so no photo.

Sport Men 40-plus:

Left:  Dave Benson gets serious about
speed as he nears the lap/finish split on
the second of three laps. Dave gets a
ribbon and team points with the 6th place
finish in Sport Men 40-plus.

Right:  Mules Ear.

Sport Women:

Left:   Getting some more speed as
she nears the finish line, Cat Kalwies
takes the 9th place spot in Sport

Right:  The Men 57-plus group heads
into the shakeout loop, with UMB well
represented by Bruce, Joel, and Gene.

Pro Men:

the maple grove just before the little
pavement jog. Still a couple of more laps
to go, and our only Pro will have a 4th
place finish.

Right:  The Expert Men 40-plus group
emerges from the trees and hits the first
meadow of the shakeout loop with Mark
in the lead.

Expert Men 19-29:    UMB had no Expert Men 19-29 riders! (Casey moved to Pro.)

Expert Men 30-39:  UMB had no Expert Men 30-39 riders!

Expert Men 40-plus:

Left:   Jason Sparks carves a hard turn as he
heads uphill to start his second lap. Still behind
Mark at this point, Jason fights past to snatch
the 2nd place finish in Expert Men 40-plus.

Right:   Mark Messer cranks uphill as the twisting trail
meanders through maples. Mark also gets on the podium,
finishing one second behind Jason for 3rd place.

Left:   Powering through a corner on his second
lap, Mike Engberson makes a fast race to finish with
4th place in the Expert Men 40-plus category.

Right:   Jeno Smith rolls out of an aspen grove and into
the grassy meadow as he hustles to the 5th place
spot in the group.

Expert Women:     UMB had no Expert Women riders!

Left:   Denmark Jensen gets out of the saddle
and cranks hard as he heads toward the
lap/finish split, nailing the 2nd place finish
in Singlespeed.

Right:  Sally hits the finish line as Glen calls
her time and a volunteer runs out to pull
her racing tag.

Left:  Richard Ewell is in free-fall down the
final slope of the shakeout loop, ready to
head over to the main race loop. Richard
grabs the 3rd place spot in Clydesdale.

Right:   Richard holds the white ribbon at
the award ceremony as the Clydesdales
get their kudos and loot.

into the zigzag finishing chute, in 3rd place
for Women 35-plus.

through the assortment of prizes, hoping
to find something fun and useful.
XXL shirt... Girls socks... Reflectors...
Other team's water bottle... Shrader pump
for my presta tires...

Men 50-plus:
Left:  Jeff Kingsford hustles toward the
uphill turn to start the second of his
three laps, taking the 4th place spot
in Men 50-plus.

Right:  The Messer family (and Jason) at
the expert-class awards.

Men 57-plus:

Joel Quinn turns into the trees at the
end of the shakeout loop, already in
1st place with two big loops to go.

Bruce Argyle gets low and cranks hard
as he approaches the finishing zone
for a podium spot at 3rd place.

Gene Poncelet hits the downhill stretch
of the shakeout loop, taking the 7th
place finish in Men 57-plus.

We're down to the critical "end game." Three more races to go. It's crunch time. Individual racers will be fighting for points toward their category championships. For example, at this race Joel took over 1st place in Men's 57-plus. The team championship is up for grabs, and these final races will determine who gets the big shiny trophy for their shop wall. Mad Dog is still ahead, but the win is easily within reach if our racers show up and race hard.

Ian's helmet-cam video:  pending... watch the forum

Left:  Hangin' chillin' eatin' at the UMB HQ after the race. Trying different sauces on the pork. Sampling salads, fruit, cookies. Great stuff.
