Frozen Hog 2006

The 2006 Frozen Hog race was held Saturday, February 4 in Lambert Park, Alpine. There were 93 racers competing in 13 age-and-skill categories. The overall race champion was Bart Gillespie from Salt Lake City, finishing his shakeout lap and three main laps in 48:13.

The four-person team competition was won by Racer's Cycle Service of Provo, with 30 total "podium points" (Gregy Gibson, Racer Gibson, Bart Gillespie, Kenny Jones).

Racers varied from pros like #11 Bart Gillespie of Salt Lake (left), to enthusiastic newcomers such as #23, Kyle Jackson of American Fork (right).

There were the intense (#15 Kenny Jones of Orem, a member of the winning Racer's Cycle Service team), and there were the fun-loving (#53, Kris Nosak of Orem).

We had plenty of buff women, like #84 Erin Gibson of Provo, and tough males like #24 Steven Brumbaugh of Brigham City.

And of course, winter riding is difficult and tricky. So there was a spill...

or two.

The shakeout loop was ugly, with ice, loose snow, and ruts. But it served its purpose of separating riders before they reached the singletrack. The race loop through Lambert Park was in great shape, with some slightly-treacherous loose snow, lots of hardpack, and frozen dirt-and-rock singletrack.

We have to say the 4th Frozen Hog is our favorite.

The Frozen Hog is a not-for-profit event. Money raised by this race is donated for improvement of mountain bike trails. The guys at UMB, such as Bruce and Matt on the right, get a Frozen Hog t-shirt for their hard work. Thanks, riders, for your part in improving our bike trails.

And now, a word from our sponsor...

Please remember these businesses as friends of mountain biking. Approximately $2500 in goods and services was distributed as raffle and winner's prizes to racers at the Frozen Hog. (As the primary sponsor, UMB provided over $500 in freebies.)

Thanks to Alpine City for allowing us to use the Lambert Park trail system.

Kohler's grocery store in Highland provided snacks and loot bags.
