Hammerfest at Soldier Hollow
Soldier Hollow, Midway, May 19, 2012

At Soldier Hollow, 35 racers represented the UMB team for the 5th race of the 2012 Intermountain Cup season. The day before the race a rainstorm dampened the trails, drying just in time to make the surface absolutely perfect for riding. Raceday weather was sunny but pleasantly cool. UMB had first-place wins by Dallin Hatch and Lee Nitchman, plus second-place finishes by Draeden Jensen, Ryan Margetts, Michael Dodge, Tim Martindale, Jake Van Wagoner, Ian Beaty, Jay Griffin, and Joel Quinn.

Left:  Racers head up the singletrack to the first XC ski run with Midway in the background. That's Mike in the middle.

Category 9-and-under:

Dropping into the meadow above the start
line, Draeden Jensen hits a bit of brake
as he finishes his laps in 2nd place.

With early-morning mud sticking to her
tires, Katie Dodge zips over the ski area
on the way to 4th place in 9-and-under.

Josh Nielsen pedals his bike up a
grassy slope on the meadow to nail the
5th place position in the category.

The ski meadow just above the start-finish area, looking south.
The race loop takes a few meanders through this area before
fnishing on the grass just below the timing tower.

Michael Dodge follows Katie around the 9-and-under loop.
The two youngest groups raced at 9 am, with the main race
starting after the mud dried at 10.

Category 10-12:
Left:   Powering toward the finish line
after completing the 2.5-mile half lap,
Baylor Payne rocks to 5th place in the
10-12 category for a nice ribbon and
4 points for the UMB team.

Right:   Looking west from the race
area toward Mount Timpanogos.

Beginner 13-15:

Left:   Dylan Payne cranks around
an uphill turn between cross-country
ski slopes on the way to the 6th place
ribbon in Beginner 13-15.

Right:  The racers assemble for the
pre-race briefing. The timing tower
is on the left. The UMB canopy is
right in the middle of the photo, just
above the ICup trailer and tent.

Beginner 16-18:    UMB had no Beginner 16-18 riders at this race!

Beginner 19-29:
Left:  Dallin Hatch carves a hard turn as he switches
from a downhill ski slope to uphill. Dallin is about
three miles into his 8.5 mile lap and will finish with the
1st place victory.

Right:   Chasing behind Dallin, Ryan Margetts cranks
toward the red ribbon for 2nd place in Beginner
Men 19-29. It's worth 6 points to the team.

Beginner 30-39:

Left:   Michael Dodge fires uphill on the narrow
singletrack as he nails a nice 2nd place finish in
Beginner Men 30-39. In addition to team points
for UMB, Michael gets Daddy Points for riding
with daughter Katie in the first race.

Right:   Carving a hard turn as he nears the finish
line, Spencer Neeley grabs a 4th place ribbon
for himself as he contributes to the UMB team
win at Soldier Hollow.

Much of the course crisscrosses between cross-country
ski runs. This makes for a lot of painful climbs followed by
fast descents. Jeff is out of the saddle and climbing.

The cross-country ski run heads up a canyon. After making
a big fat T on the upper slope, it will drop back down again
on a ski run just a few yards to the left of this photo.

Beginner 40-plus:

Tim Martindale carves a turn early in
the race, fighting his way to a podium
spot with 2nd place.

New to the team with this race, Mike
Mclaughlin
 rockets downhill to get his
first ribbon by nailing 5th place.

Adam Reynders cranks hard uphill late
in his lap to take the 7th place finish
in Beginner Men 40-plus.

Beginner Women:     UMB had no Beginner Women riders at this race!

Sport/Expert 13-15:   UMB had no Sport/Expert 13-15 riders at this race!

Sport/Expert 16-18:
Left:   Jake Van Wagoner grunts uphill
past a willow tree in the Sport/Expert
16-18 category, taking the 2nd place
spot on the podium.

Right:   On the ski runs, there's plenty
of room to pass, as long as you're
willing to go into the grass. Jason leads
Mitt in the Expert 40-plus group.

Sport Men 19-29:   UMB had no Sport Men 19-29 riders at this race!

Sport Men 30-34:
Left:   Nearing the finish line on his
second lap, Ian Beaty records the race
as he fights to the 2nd place spot in
Sport Men 30-34.

Right:   Narrow singletrack on the upper
mountain. The terrain has oak mixed with
sage, with balsamroot (and the occasional
cactus) at trailside.

Sport Men 35-39:

Left:    Lee Nitchman cranks hard along the ski run
on his first lap, grabbing the 1st place win in the
Sport Men 35-39 group.

Right:   In his second race in the Sport category,
Christian Burrell sprints toward the next turn
on his 17-mile race, getting the ribbon with 6th place.

Sport Men 40-plus:    UMB had no Sport 40-plus riders at this race!

Sport Women:

Left:    Cat Kalwies hammers down as
she exits a turn on lap number one,
finishing with the 4th place spot in
Sport Women.

Right:   The view from the top of the hill.
The water at mid-right is Deer Creek
Reservoir. Just below the trees at
the middle of the photo is the lawn
containing the finish area.

Expert Men 19-29:     UMB had no Expert Men 19-29 riders at this race!

Expert Men 30-39:

Left:   Almost two laps finished and
one more to go. Ben Schmalz pops over
a small rise in the meadow above the
finish zone as he rides to 8th place
in Expert Men 30-39.

Right:  Drafting works on some of
the flatter ski runs. A group of 13-15
category riders (including Dylan in the
UMB yellow) lets Sally give them
a pull.

Expert Men 40-plus:

Left:   John Higgins carves a hard turn in the meadow.
Down a slope, around the trees, then up "the wall"
-- the hatefully steep little hill just southwest of
the finish line. John gets team points with 7th place.

Right:  Coming close behind, Mitt Stewart rolls into the same
turn as he takes the 8th place position in Expert Men 40-plus.
UMB riders took finishes number 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12.

Jason Sparks is two laps out of three
as he eyes the next slope, finishing
with 9th place in the category.

Mike Engberson crests the first grassy
uphill and turns onto the ski path on lap
number one, racing to 10th place.

Geno Smith fires across the meadow as
he nears the final turn into the finish
area, nailing the 12th place position.

Expert Women:   UMB had no Expert Women riders at this race!

Singlespeed:

Left:   With this race, Dave Benson moves into the
Singlespeed category and grabs a podium spot for
himself with the 3rd place finish.

Right:   Denmark Jensen carves a turn in the meadow
above the finish area as he races to 4th place
in Singlespeed.

Clydesdale:
Left:   Leaning hard into a turn in the meadow,
John Twitchell approaches the finish area
to take the 3rd place podium spot in Clydesdale.

Right:  About two miles into the main loop, Ryan Payne
rolls a corner to transition from downhill to uphill,
finishing with 4th place in the category. Team points
are awarded to the top 7 finishers in each category,
but no more than two riders per team in that category.
So both Ryan and John grab points for UMB -- for a
total of 11 from our clydes.

Women 35-plus:

Left:  Sally Reynders drops the steep
ramp down to a tight turn in the sage brush
on the way to a podium spot with 3rd place
in Women 35-plus.

Right:  Racers that have finished swap
war stories and check the leaderboard
for their finishing times and their
finishing order within their categories.

Men 50-plus:

Left:   Jay Griffin zips around a turn as he fights
a tough Men 50-plus field, taking the 2nd place
win in the category.

Right:   Three miles into his first lap, Jeff Kingsford
cranks uphill toward the next ski run, taking 14th place
in the Men 50-plus group.

Men 57-plus:

Joel Quinn cranks through a grove of
willow and box elder on the way to
2nd place in Men 57-plus.

Showing team dedication with a color-
coordinated bandage, Bruce Argyle gets
the 5th place finish.

Gene Poncelet drops off the hill into a
switchback above the meadow, taking
6th place in the category.

Pro Men:
Left:    Coming from the first singletrack
onto the first ski lane, Casey Zaugg has
a good start in the Pro Men race but
has to take a DNF for the day.

Right:  The team gets together for the post
race picnic. The cool temperature means
that many racers are working on their tans
instead of eating under the canopy.

Pro Women:
Left:    Meghan Sheridan powers around
a hard turn in the meadow above the
finish line, getting a podium spot with
3rd place in Pro Women.

Right:  Oriental chicken salad. Fruit. Chips.
Burger. Cookies. Including those
sinful Reese's Peanut Butter Cup
cookies.

This race was an important win for UMB. We held and extended our season lead. We had a good turnout across many categories. More important, those racers gave great effort and put team points into the tally. The 2012 season is now half done.
