Hammerfest at Soldier Hollow
Soldier Hollow, Midway, May 19, 2012At
Soldier Hollow, 35 racers represented the UMB team for the 5th race of the
2012 Intermountain Cup season. The day before the race a rainstorm
dampened the trails, drying just in time to make the surface absolutely
perfect for riding. Raceday weather was sunny but pleasantly cool. UMB had first-place wins by Dallin Hatch and Lee
Nitchman, plus second-place finishes by Draeden Jensen, Ryan Margetts,
Michael Dodge, Tim Martindale, Jake Van Wagoner, Ian Beaty, Jay Griffin,
and Joel Quinn.

Dropping into the meadow above the start
line, Draeden Jensen hits a bit of brake
as he finishes his laps in 2nd place. |
With early-morning mud sticking to her
tires, Katie Dodge
zips over the ski area
on the way to 4th place in 9-and-under.

Josh Nielsen pedals his bike up a
grassy slope on the meadow to nail the
5th place position in the category. |

The two youngest groups raced at 9 am, with the main race
starting after the mud dried at 10. |

Baylor Payne

10-12 category for a nice ribbon and
4 points for the UMB team.Right: Looking

around
an uphill turn between cross-country
ski slopes on the way to the 6th
place
ribbon in Beginner 13-15.

three miles into his 8.5 mile lap and will finish with the
1st place victory.Right:

place in Beginner
Men 19-29. It's worth 6 points to the team.

Dodge fires uphill on the narrow
singletrack as he nails a nice 2nd place finish in
Beginner Men 30-39. In addition to team points
for UMB, Michael gets Daddy Points for riding
with daughter Katie in the first race. Right:
Carving a hard turn as he nears the finish
line, Spencer Neeley
grabs a 4th place ribbon
for himself as he contributes to the UMB team
win at Soldier Hollow. |

Much of the course crisscrosses between
cross-country
ski runs. This makes for a lot of painful climbs followed by
fast descents. Jeff is out of the saddle and climbing. |
The cross-country ski run heads up a
canyon. After making
a big fat T on the upper slope, it will drop back down again
on a ski run just a few yards to the left of this photo. |

Tim Martindale carves a turn
early in
the race, fighting his way to a podium
spot with 2nd
place. |
New to the team with this race, Mike
Mclaughlin rockets downhill to get his
first ribbon by nailing 5th place. |
Adam Reynders cranks hard
uphill late
in his lap to take the 7th place finish
in Beginner Men 40-plus. |

16-18 category, taking the 2nd
place
spot on the podium.
Right: On the ski runs, there's plenty
of room to pass, as long as you're
willing to go into the grass. Jason leads
Mitt in the Expert 40-plus group.

Sport Men 19-29: UMB had no
Sport Men 19-29 riders at this race! |

second lap, Ian Beaty records the race
as he fights to the 2nd place spot in

sage, with balsamroot (and the occasional
cactus) at trailside.

hard along the ski run
on his first lap, grabbing the 1st place win in the
Sport Men 35-39 group. Right:

and
one more to go. Ben Schmalz pops over
a small rise in the meadow above the
finish zone as he rides to 8th place
in Expert Men 30-39. Right: Drafting
works on some of
the flatter ski runs. A group of 13-15
category riders (including Dylan in the
UMB yellow) lets Sally give them
a pull. |

Left: John Higgins carves
a hard turn in the meadow.
Down a slope, around the trees, then up "the wall"
-- the hatefully steep little hill just southwest of
the finish line. John gets team points with 7th place.Right:
Coming close behind, Mitt
Stewart rolls into the same
turn as he takes the 8th place position in Expert Men 40-plus.
UMB riders took finishes number 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12. |

Jason Sparks is two laps out
of three
as he eyes the next slope, finishing
with 9th place in the category. |
Mike Engberson
crests the first grassy
uphill and turns onto the ski path on lap
number one, racing to 10th place. |
Geno Smith fires across the
meadow as
he nears the final turn into the finish
area, nailing the 12th place position. |

above the finish area as he races to 4th place
in Singlespeed. |

|
Left: Leaning hard into a turn in the meadow,
John Twitchell approaches the finish area
to take the 3rd
place podium spot in Clydesdale.Right: About
two miles into the main loop, Ryan Payne
rolls a corner to transition from downhill to uphill,
finishing with 4th
place in the category. Team points
are awarded to the top 7 finishers in each category,
but no more than two riders per team in that category.
So both Ryan and John grab points for UMB -- for a
total of 11 from our clydes. |

steep
ramp down to a tight turn in the sage brush
on the way to a podium spot with 3rd

place

a good start in the Pro Men race but
has to take a DNF for the day.Right: The
team gets together for the post
race picnic. The cool temperature means
that many racers are working on their tans
instead of eating under the canopy. |

around
a hard turn in the meadow above the
finish line, getting a podium spot with
