Snowbird Mountain Bout
Little Cottonwood Canyon, July 7, 2012

The weather was cool but humid at Snowbird, as two days of rain had drenched the mountainside. Things were a bit slippery for the first race, but the trail was drying by the second. The new singletrack descent was a hit with riders, increasing both the distance and the fun. UMB had first-place finishes by Adam Lee, Dallin Hatch, Stephan Bergen, and Dave Benson. David Ressa, Rachel Hutchings, Hayden Sampson, Ian Beaty, Cat Kalwies, John Twitchell, and Meghan Sheridan were second-place winners.

Left:   In the Pro Men field, Casey Zaugg switchbacks up the mountain with the Salt Lake Valley in the background.

Category 9-and-under:

Left:   Piloting his bike over slippery roots on
the singletrack trail, Draeden Jensen heads
toward a podium finish with 3rd place in the
9-and-under category at 8 am.

Right:  Just like the big guys, Tylan Parkinson has to
bang over the granite rocks of this tough trail as
he grabs the 4th place ribbon.

Category 10-12:

Left:   In a tough long race, the
10-12 category went the distance on
the big loop at the 8:30 race. David Ressa
is on his way to the 2nd place win
as he climbs the switchbacks. 5.1 miles
and 800 vertical. Wow!

Right:  In the morning chill, riders
come to the start line above the lodge
for the 8:30 race.

Beginner 13-15:   UMB had no Beginner 13-15 riders at this race!

Beginner 16-18:    UMB had no Beginner 16-18 riders at this race!

Some families spent time on the alpine slide as their
racers fought for position on the mountain.
Views were good all around. The mountain was green, and
the air had cleared from the recent forest fires to the south.
Beginner 19-29:   UMB had no Beginner Men 19-29 riders at this race!

Beginner 30-39:

Left:  Kevin Casto climbs up toward Mid Gad
with the world's largest copper mine in the
background across the valley, nailing the 4th
place ribbon in Beginner Men 30-39.

Right:  Back racing with a tougher leaner motor,
Karl Parkinson powers up a rocky steep to
take the 6th place spot in the category.

Beginner 40-plus:

Left:   Heading back across the mountain as
he finishes lap two, Justin Sampson gets his
podium finish with 3rd place.

Right:  Adam Reynders climbs uphill at the
8200-foot level. Another 200 vertical feet to
go before he can head downhill on lap one.
Despite a flat tire, Adam runs the bike in for
5th place in Beginner Men 40-plus.

Beginner Women:

Left:  Rachel Hutchings powers up and
around a turn as she heads back across
the mountain on lap two, taking 2nd place
in Beginner Women.

Right:   Things were a bit slippery for the
first race. Wet roots, wet rocks, and just
a taste of mud made bike handling dicey
on some of the more technical sections in
the trees. Here Draeden gets a leg out to
regain control on the downhill.

Sport/Expert 13-15:

Left:  In the Sport/Expert category in the first
race, Adam Lee finishes up lap two of three,
claiming the 1st place spot.

Right:  Hayden Sampson climbs up and around
a switchback as he grabs his podium share with
 2nd place in Sport/Expert 13-15.

Sport/Expert 16-18:  UMB had no Sport/Expert 16-18 riders at this race!

Sport Men 19-29:

Left:   In the second race at 11 am,
Dallin Hatch carves a tight turn as
he heads to the lap/finish zone,
taking 1st place in Sport Men 19-29.
Many riders wore arm bands or green
helmet dots in honor of Patrick McKnight
(#33) who died from his injuries at last
week's race.

Right:   Paintbrush among the aspen leaves.

Sport Men 30-34:

Ian Beaty cranks uphill with video
camera recording the action, finishing
in 2nd place in Sport Men 30-34.

Darren Stirland pivots onto the gravel
doubletrack of the finishing zone as
he takes podium with 3rd place.

Powering up and over a rock outcrop,
Ben Hutchings finishes lap two on the
way to 4th place in the category.

Sport Men 35-39:

Christian Burrell takes a deep breath
as he starts the switchbacks up to the
top, finishing 4th place in Sport 35-39.

Adam Little turns to the lap/finish area
on his second lap, nailing the 6th place
ribbon despite a broken chain.

Turning into the rough downhill early
in lap one, Michael Dodge rides to the
7th place position in the category.

The rain made everything lush and green for the race... as if you
had time to take your eyes off the trail for a second.

A spectator chatters encouragement to the passing racers
from his viewing stand in a fir tree.

Sport Men 40-plus:

Stephan Bergen cranks up the climb on
his first lap, winning the Sport Men 40-plus
category with 1st place.

Brian Ressa fights up and over the rocks
on lap two of three, grabbing team points
with the 7th place finish.

Sprinting up the canyon to complete
lap number one, Denmark Jensen
takes a DNF after his third flat tire.

Sport Women:

Left:    On her first lap, Cat Kalwies gets
down over the bars on the switchback
climb, finishing with a nice 2nd place
position in the Sport Women category.

Right:   The race loop spends most of its
time as singletrack winding through
aspen and fir. There are more than a few
roots and rocks to contend with.
Justin pops over aspen roots on the
damp trail.

Expert Men 19-29:   UMB had no Expert Men 19-29 riders at this race!

Expert Men 30-39:   UMB had no Expert Men 39-39 riders at this race!

Expert Men 40-plus:

Mike Engberson zooms up the
switchbacks on the way to 4th place
in Expert Men 40-plus.

Mitt Stewart drops off the first singletrack
section onto a brief doubletrack climb
on his way to 5th place

Powering up and over the rocks on lap
two, Geno Smith is in good position,
but DNF's the race.

Expert Women:      UMB had no Expert Women riders at this race!

Singlespeed:

Left:   In the Singlespeed category,
Dave Benson climbs through the fir
trees to win 1st place.

Right:   The old trail back to the lap/finish
feels like you should be "almost done" but
it's a pretty taxing and technical bit of riding.
Gene tackles an uphill turn over granite
bounders.

Clydesdale:
Left:   John Twitchell gets up and over the
rocks on lap two as he gets on the podium
with 2nd place in Clydesdale.

Right:   A curious marmot has a view of
the race from his granite viewing stand.

Women 35-plus:

Left:  Sally Reynders heads uphill on
her first lap, finishing her 10.2 miles and
1600 vertical feet of climbing on the
podium at 3rd place.

Right:   Riders return to home base and
swap racing stories before heading
back uphill to get their award ribbons.

Men 50-plus:    UMB had no Men 50-plus riders at this race!

Men 57-plus:

Rick Morris cranks uphill on lap one
as he takes the 4th place finish for
Men 57-plus.

Bruce Argyle has enough leg to stand
and tackle the rocky climb on his last
lap, finishing with 6th place.

Gene Poncelet heads up the
switchbacks on his first lap, taking
7th place in the category.

Pro Men:
Left:    Casey Zaugg powers through a turn
as the trail crosses a ski slope, getting
a podium spot in Pro Men with the
3rd place finish.

Right:   Troubles. Adam runs his flat tire
across a meadow with 1/3 mile to go
before the race is finished.

Pro Women:

Left:   Meghan Sheridan hits the rocky
turn above the bridge as she rides to
2nd place in Pro Women.

Right:   Hanging out and fueling up after
the race.

The new singletrack downhill has turned Snowbird from "it's OK but..." to a really great racing loop. No more hateful ball-bearing tram-road descent. Snowbird 2012 was the best race here ever. The race loop is now 99% singletrack and 100% fun. But what's the deal with Men 50-plus? One rider? Really? ONE rider? A message from your elders in the 57-plus: you youngsters missed a super race.
