Taming the Tetons
Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Saturday June 26, 2010

A thunderstorm hit Teton Village just as riders were heading to the race site, but by race time it was sunny and the trails were in great condition. There were a few swamp spots in addition to the usual plank-rides over marshy areas, but Jackson again offered up beautiful technical forest singletrack with plenty of rocks and roots. 37 riders from the UMB team raced at Jackson. Joshua Peterson, Kevin Pferdner, Zachary Peterson, Jack Gage, Ryan Nielsen, and Angelica Jameriez scored first place finishes, with Justin Pferdner, Andrew Weber, Steven Barlow, Rachel Hutchings, Mike Horne, and Joel Quinn grabbing 2nd place.

Left:  Derek chases Nathan around a corner on the initial climb of the first lap.

Category 9-and-under:

Left:  Justin Pferdner speeds down the bike park
jump area on his last lap around the 9-and-under
course before finishing in 2nd place.

Right:  Nathan Weber looks toward the next root as
he navigates the singletrack between the initial
climb and the jump course on the way to 5th place.

Hattie Ransom clears the rocks of the
singletrack and rides to a nice finish at
8th (2nd place girls).

Olivia Weber exits the aspen-lined
singletrack onto the ski slope and the
final downhill, taking 10th (3rd place girls)

Sawyer Ransom cranks uphill on the first
of his three laps of the 9-and-under
course to finish with 14th place.

Category 10-12:

Left:  Joshua Peterson cranks out some additional
speed as he climbs the singletrack away from the
shakeout doubletrack. Joshua gets the job done
with a 1st place victory in the 10-12 group.

Right:  Harrison Woodard heads into the 4-mile
10-12 loop, which was the first 2/3 of the main race
loop. Our young riders raced the same tough tech
challenges as the big guys. Harrison takes 5th place
for the category.

Left:  Shawn Nielsen gets down and powers uphill
through the aspens on the way to the 6th place
ribbon.

Right:  Hunter Ransom cranks across a grassy ski
slope as he grinds out the tough 12-and-under loop
to finish with 7th place.

Beginner 13-15:  UMB had no Beginner 13-15 riders at this race!

Beginner 16-18:   UMB had no Beginner 16-18 riders at this race!

Beginner 19-29:

Left:  Andrew Weber flies through an
aspen grove nearing the end of the lap,
winning the red 2nd place ribbon in the
Beginner 19-29 category.

Right: The UMB base camp sits under dark
threatening clouds. Racers watched the sky
nervously, but as race time approached,
the sun came out and conditions were
absolutely fabulous.

Beginner 30-39:

Left:  Kevin Pferdner carves a turn
around a pine tree early in his first lap
as he grabs the 1st place win. Kevin
rode the Sport distance to see how
his time compared, with an eye to
moving up to Sport Category.

Right: Jackie, AKA Cujo poco, eyes
the other dogs with bad intent. "Let me out
of here and I'll kill you all!" she snarled,
as she covered the car's insides with white
hairs and dog slobber.

Beginner 40-plus:

Left:  Steven Barlow grinds up a steep
slope as he fights to the 2nd place spot
in the Beginner 40-plus category.

Right:  The first group is away from the start
line and fighting furiously for position as
the gravel road gets steeper. Just uphill,
the singletrack begins, and the passing
gets tougher.

Beginner Women:

Left:  Rachel Hutchings pops out of the
woods and onto the ski slope early in
race, as she takes an impressive 2nd place
finish in Beginner Women.

Right:  Nathan approaches the lap/finish
split. He's pulling to the right to start
his last lap. Next time, he'll head left
to where officials will pull his racer tag.

Sport/Expert 13-15:

Left:  Zachary Peterson gets off the saddle to crank
out more uphill speed as he grabs the early lead
and holds on to it, scoring the 1st place podium
spot in Sport-Expert 13-15.

Right:  Mud-splattered Brayden Nielsen is almost finished
with his race as he flies down the hill to snatch a
podium spot with 3rd place.

Sport/Expert 16-18:  UMB had no S/E 16-18 riders.

Sport Men 19-29:

Left:   Ian Beaty pedals hard through a turn early
in his first lap. On his helmet, his camera will record
his entire race, all the way to 3rd place in the Sport
Men 19-29 category.

Right:  Stephen Brown grunts hard up a stiff slope
about midway through the first lap. Steve finishes
with a ribbon and team points at 6th place.

Sport Men 30-34:

Left:  Jack Gage hits a turn on the serpentine singletrack
of the initial climb, nailing down another 1st place win
in his quest for the season championship.

Right:  Jake Weber grinds out another brutal climb
as he earns himself a podium spot with the 3rd place
finish in Sport Men 30-34.

Left:  Steve Brumbaugh tilts the bike through a turn
on a downhill ski-slope meadow. Steve finishes his
two laps with the 5th place position.

Right:  Dan Hutchings gets forward to grind out the
climb on his way to the green 6th place ribbon.

Jackson Hole is a beautiful race setting. The Gondola
heads across the race loop on its way to the top.
To the north are the peaks of Grand Teton National
Park, seen from the top of the Gondola.
Sport Men 35-39:

Left:   Ryan Nielsen carves a high-speed downhill
turn through the aspens as he nears the finish of
his two laps. Ryan earns the alpha dog ranking in
Sport Men 35-39 with a 1st place victory.

Right:  Mike Horne pivots the bike around a downhill turn
on the ski slope and heads toward the finish line and
2nd place podium spot.

Sport Men 40-plus:

Jason Sparks cranks hard to stay ahead
of the competition to take another 4th
place in this tough group.

Brian Ressa  powers a turn during the
initial climb, finishing with a ribbon and
team points at 6th place.

Dale Hutchings chases close behind,
climbing hard through the rocks and
roots on the way to 7th place.

Jackson is the most technical of the Intermountain Cup
race sites. There are plenty of rocks, roots, and
narrow singletrack to navigate, even for our young riders.
Racers hang around the leaderboard and discuss
the events of the race. Rumor has it, 2010 will be the
last race at Jackson Hole.
Sport Women:

Angelica Ramirez jumps to the front
and tilts into a tight turn on the singletrack,
taking another 1st place win.

Cat Finlayson cranks across the meadow
on the way to a podium spot with her
 3rd place finish.

Colleen Tvorik climbs up one of the
race's steepest spots as she finishes with
the 5th place position in Sport Women.

Expert Men 19-29:  UMB had no Expert Men 19-29 riders at this race!

Expert Men 30-39:

Nathan Drozd hustles through three
tough laps to take the 7th place finish
in Expert Men 30-39.

Darren Harris asks the pedals for even
more speed as he nears the finish line
in 10th place after moving up from Sport.

Derek Ransom tilts through a downhill
turn on the ski slope. Derek has to take
a DNF for the race.

Expert Men 40-plus:  UMB had no Expert Men 40-plus riders!

Expert Women:   UMB had no Expert Women riders at this race!

Singlespeed:   No Singlespeed riders for the team today!

Clydesdale:

Left:  Ryan Payne looks to the end of
the climb with hope in his eyes. Ryan
gets the 5th place ribbon in Clydesdale.

Right:  Trying hard to neither burn, nor
dump on the ground, the second batch
of hot dogs. Darn tricky flimsy little
tabletop grill!

Women 35-plus:

Left:  Sally Hutchings hits the ski slope
as she clears the aspen forest, finishing
her race with 4th place.

Right:  Race over. Picnic time.

Men 50-plus:

Left:  Jeff Kingsford is looking hardcore
as he takes a turn in the trees. Jeff gets
to the podium with a nice 3rd place win.

Right:  Transportation and lodging are
challenges for a race like Jackson Hole.
Ryan commutes from race to motor home
with an ingenious self-designed bike
rack system for his motorcycle.

Men 57-plus:

Joel Quinn hits the final aspen grove
before finishing with the red ribbon
at 2nd place in Men 57-plus.

Bruce Argyle fights up the hill, trying
to stay ahead of Gene, and gets his first
season podium with 3rd place.

Gene Poncelet hits a steep little bit
of downhill as he rides to the 4th
place spot in the category.

The team scored another big victory at Jackson. Beautiful setting, fun and technical singletrack, and all the cool stuff in Jackson Hole waiting for us after the race. Thanks to all who were able to make the trip.
