Stan Crane Memorial
Draper - Monday May 31, 2010

The weather was (finally) non-threatening, so riders turned out in huge numbers. Around 400 riders competed. In the Sport Men 40+, 43 riders started and 37 finished. The UMB team fielded a total of 57 riders. Our largest categories were the 9-and-under and the 10-12, with seven riders each. First place finishes were scored by Jack Gage, Darren Harris, Eric Ellis, and Chris Cole, with 2nd place by Joshua Peterson, Taylor Watkins, Kevin Pferdner, Sally Fairbairn, and Joel Quinn. Draper's trails were in great shape, and racers enjoyed the 9-mile loop. The course mixed straight-ahead climbs with flying descents, plus a bit of twisting tree-dodging. The weather was perfect; filtered sunlight, not hot and not chilly.

Left:  Jake Weber heads toward the tunnel -- and out onto the main loop -- in a line of Sport riders.

Category 9-and-under:

Left:  Nathan Weber rounds a corner in the oak brush
of the small loop, finishing with a ribbon and team points
at 6th place.

Right:  Hattie Ransom pedals through thick grass
on the way to taking overall 8th place, winning the
2nd place ribbon for the girls.

Left:  Olivia Weber cranks uphill toward the finish
line as others walk. Olivia gets the 15th place position.

Right:  Aiden Thayer steers the bike into the turns
near the pond and finishes his laps with
17th place.

Sawyer Ransom gets determined as
he heads toward the finish line, taking
21st place in 9-and-under.

Parker Horton leads a string of young
bikers through the oak trees to get
24th place.

In his first race, Tylan Parkinson enjoys
a good ride, and makes his finish
at 25th place.

Category 10-12:

Left:  Joshua Peterson pops out of the trees and
sprints toward the finish line after two 12-and-under
loops, getting onto the winners' podium at 2nd place.

Right:  Hunter Ransom coasts through a grassy
meadow before hitting the tight turns in the oak
trees. Hunter gets a ribbon and nails some
team points with his 6th place finish.

Left:  Harrison Woodard heads through the pass
between the oak trees on his first lap around the
12-and-under loop, making a good race to finish
at 7th place.

Right:  Shawn Nielsen steers the bike into a turn
as he rides to 8th place in the 10-12 category.

New to the team this week is Will
Carnell
, finishing the race with the
13th place position.

Maggie Ressa watches the trail as
she nears a tight turn in the oak,
grabbing the 14th place finish.

David Ressa pedals the bike toward
the finish line after finishing the
two laps with 15th place.

Beginner 13-15:  UMB had no Beginner 13-15 riders at this race!

Beginner 16-18:

below Highland Drive, around the pond,

the mountain for the big laps. Racers would
return to the little loop at the end of each

Dan Nath isn't able to return his water bottle to
the cage on the twisting trail, but isn't ready to
chuck it, either.

Derek Ransom raises water helmet-high as he skitters
through the creek after leaving the tunnel. Around the
pond, and he'll have completed a 9-mile lap.

Sport Men 19-29:

Left:  Stephen Brown hits the "water hazard" as he
leaves the two-way traffic of the tunnel, finishing
with team points for his 7th place spot.

race and nails the 9th place spot in Sport Men 19-29.

with 28th place for his two laps.

in the sagebrush as he heads toward

into a race that will go on for 27 miles of Expert-division
suffering. Derek gets onto the podium with a nice 3rd place
finish!

Right:  Mike Engberson leaves a small meadow and
cranks into the shade of the trees on the way to a
12th place finish.

turn on the way to team points at
7th place in Expert Men 40-plus.

Right:  The team gathers under and around
the canopies for a Memorial Day picnic.
With many racers bringing family, I think
we set a new record for number of burgers
and hot dogs grilled. Thanks to all who
brought "eats."

Expert Women:   UMB had no Expert Women riders at this race!

Singlespeed:

Left:  Chris Cole hits the creek as he bursts out of
the tunnel under Highland Drive, rocking the one-gear
category with a 1st place victory!

Right:  Shane Horton carves a turn in the high grass

category for this race, cranking out a ribbon for

was one Big, and one 12-and-under, for an 11 mile day.

Women 35-plus:

Sally Fairbairn gets rolling toward the
tunnel to start the race, finishing with
podium at 2nd place.

Jolene Nosack hustles toward the finish
line to lock down the 4th place spot
in the Women 35-plus group.

Sally Hutchings hits the tall grass on
a downhill section as she finishes the
race with 7th place.

Men 50-plus:

Left:  Jay Griffin grabs his usual spot at the front of
the line, but tears a tire sidewall. He hustles the repair
but can only fight back to 4th place.

Right:  Jeff Kingsford grinds toward the tunnel to start
his first of two laps, making another nice finish
with team points at 7th place.

Men 57-plus:

Joel Quinn hits the downhill section
with his new bike, grabbing another
podium finish at 2nd place.

Bruce Argyle enjoys his highest finish
of the 2010 season with a 4th place
finish in Men 57-plus.

Gene Poncelet cranks past the rock
retaining wall early in the first lap,
taking the green ribbon at 6th place.

In this race, the three big teams were closely matched. We got our racers out, and we raced hard. It was nice to see a few UMB racers standing on the top spot of the podium for the first time. Draper was a great effort by the team.
