Hammerfest at the Hollow
Soldier Hollow -
May 16, 2009It was a perfect day for racing as the sun lit
up the clean air on the east side of Mount Timpanogos in the Heber Valley.
Temperatures were pleasantly cool. The trail was dry, well, except for a
little gooey grass just before the finish line. Surprisingly, dust wasn't
a major issue. On the descent from the upper mountain, some tire-track
grooves made the sharp turns a little more dicey, and many turns featured
challenging washboard bumps. But overall the
singletrack was smooth, fast, and fun. Our team had first place finishes
by Dallin Johnson, Jared Muir, Colleen Tvorik, and second place wins by
Jakob Haderlie, Zachary Peterson, Ryan Payne, Jay Griffin, and Justin
Griffin.
Left: Jason Sparks carves a turn in the
meadow south of the finish area. Around the trees, up The Wall, then
sprint to the finish line.

on the UMB race team by turning in a strong
3rd place win, good for a trip to the podium
and 6 team points. |

Left: Sydney Nielsen takes
a hit off the hydration
pack after the mean climb up to the top of the
9-and-under loop. Sydney pedals on to take
13th
place. Right: Jacey Messer
races for the first time at
Soldier Hollow and completes the two laps
as the 16th finisher. Glad to have you on the
team, Jacey! |
|
|
Left: Zachary Peterson battles
at the front of the
10-12 pack, completing this tough race at 2nd place.
This category did two laps of approximately 4 miles at
Solder Hollow, including some pretty tough climbing. Right:

Peterson hurries to a solid 3rd place win
with a big gap on the other riders. Together, brothers
Josh and Zach make a potent point-grabbing machine
for the UMB team! |

3rd
place on the podium in his second start
as a UMB racer, climbing away from the
starting area and up the mountain.Right: UMB's
10-12 racers take the front
row as Ed (on the left) gets the young
competitors ready to start their race. |

down into the grunting position on
a stiff climb toward the end of the lap. Ryan gets another
good finish at 3rd place.Right:
Mark Messer leans into a turn as Kevin drafts,
taking the 5th place finish on this tough course. |

had no Sport/Expert 13-15 riders at Soldier Hollow |
|

an aggressive
cornering move, ready to begin the next
uphill sprint, and nails 2nd
place. The
up-and-down of this course favors a good
all-around rider.Right: That
tough first race. Jacey rolls
down a narrow bumpy singletrack that's
harder than it looks. Jacey is looking
at another girl who is sitting in the grass
after crashing. Mark cruises along behind
his daughter giving encouragement. |
|
|
Left: Stephen Brown corners
hard as he
winds through the final turns approaching
the finish area, nailing a nice 4th
place.Right: With
passing room on the climb,
Justin fights past team mate Jeff to get
to the top of the hill first. |
|

Derek Ransom powers up the hill
to
get a ribbon and team points at 5th place. |
Dan Hutchings cranks through
a turn in
the meadow, nearing 12th place. |

on
his way to the 13th place finish. |

wearing his lucky
Bert and Ernie jersey and cranking hard. It's probably
not the jersey that earned him a nice 6th place finish. |
|
|
Left: Catherine Reay carves into a
washboard downhill turn as she makes
a great ride to take 5th place.Right: Uphill,
again. That's Eric and Ryan
in the line. The Soldier Hollow course
has a lot of up and down riding, with
tough climbs followed by downhill
flights that gives no time for rest. |
|
|
Left: Eric Ellis heads up
the hill on his
first of three laps, finishing the race
in the ribbons at 6th place.Right: Recruiting
tool. Bruce starts frying
up the burgers and dogs above the stairs

past the turn
as he rides to the 14th place finish in

At
Soldier Hollow our team's depth across categories carried the day. UMB got
a huge start with 26 points in the 9-and-under and 10-12 categories. Then
our beginner racers added points in every single category. Sport and Open
categories filled in some critical padding, matching the competition's
efforts. It was another important win for UMB as we extended our lead
toward the season championship with our second-highest point total of the
season. We needed this one, because Mad Dog and Revolution are excellent
teams, and they'll be fighting back. Good job, racers!
