Showdown at Five Mile Pass -
May 2, 2009 Wow! What a day at Five Mile Pass. The
rain poured down, turning the clay soil into sticky slippery gumbo. Many
riders bailed and went home. But enough UtahMountainBiking race team
members were willing to brave the mud to give us a win and great memories.
UMB had first-place finishes by Hunter
Ransom, Brian Terry, Mark Messer, Dallin Johnson, Colleen Tvorik, and Jay
Griffin. Second-place winners were Brayden Nielsen, Jakob Haderlie, Ryan
Nielsen, Jordan Anderson, and Derek Ransom.
Left: 9 am, time for the kid's race. Ed
announces that the race will be postponed a while. He's out re-flagging a
new course. We're looking south toward the start line from the shelter of
the UMB canopy.
|
|
Left: Hunter Ransom sprints
out from a special
rainy-day starting line further up the hill, where the
mud isn't quite so deep or so sticky. Hunter powers
through the 9-and-under loop to nail a great muddy
1st
place victory!Right: Jakob Haderlie,
racer #349, makes his first
race for UtahMountainBiking, and takes an
impressive 2nd place win. Somehow Jakob
snuck past the official camera during the race,
so here he is receiving his 2nd place ribbon
as the mud and gloom turn to sparkling sunshine. |
|
|
Left: Jaycob Winnett also
makes his first start for
the UMB team with the Five Mile Pass race. Jaycob
motors up the hill in good form to grab the 4th place
finish in his category. Right:
Nathan Weber stands to put a little more
power to the pedal as he starts to hit the rocks
on the climb. Nathan's ride is good for the 5th
place spot in his first race as a UMB team member. |

Hattie Ransom shows
good strength
as she rides to 2nd place among the
9-and-under girls, for 6th place overall. |
Sawyer Ransom stands and
sprints
up the hill, making a good strong
ride to the 7th place position.
|
Sydney Nielsen is third among the
young lady riders, rounding out
UMB's domination with 8th place.
|
|
Left: Brayden Nielsen shows
the determination that
gave him the 2nd place finish in the
10-12 category
as he bumps up the rocks for the first of his two
trips around the shortened loop. After the climb
comes the tricky part: dodging the muck bogs
on the return part of the loop. Right: Joshua
Peterson motors past the junipers
in the chilly air, making another fine race to
3rd place in his category. |
|
|
Left: Zachary Peterson takes
a hit off the Camelbak
as he climbs away from the valley toward the highest
spot on the loop. Zach holds on to the 4th place
finish for 10-12.
Right: As the clouds hang low on the
surrounding
mountians, Harrison Woodard heads toward the
finish line. Harrison finishes in good position
at 5th place. |

slams a rock and ruptures his tubeless rear tire. With 2 miles to go,
Bruce goes for it. Riding on the floppy tire in this photo, he manhandles the
fishtailing bike to the finish line for 3rd place.
This was a key race for us. Mad Dog made an incredible
showing; their highest point total ever. But UMB also had many
enthusiastic riders who abused their bikes and bodies in the mud. We took
the victory and extended our lead toward the season
championship. UMB made team points in more categories than ever before,
setting a new record for single-race team points. And now we have some new war
stories we can tell at future races: "Remember Five Mile Pass?"
