The season-end team dinner was held Saturday, September 20
at Lambert Park's Bowery Pavilion. The weather cooperated, with balmy
temperatures and a few fluffy clouds floating by. Some of those clouds
occasionally threatened to sprinkle, but never did. It was a big turnout,
with team and family members from as far away as Morgan and Brigham City. |

|
Food! The menu was Mike's charcoal-barbequed
chicken and hot dogs. Team members
brought an assortment of delicious side
dishes and desserts. |
Season Raffle! The season raffle
gave every
UMB racer one "raffle ticket"
for each race they made during the
season. Here Kyle Jackson admires his
new Park floor pump. You didn't need to be present to win, so we're
emailing a couple of winners who couldn't make it to the BBQ. |
|
|
Awards! For his mechanical
services to the team,
Ryan Allred gets a nice certificate and a shop apron.
He made us feel like pro racers as he serviced our bikes. |
Season commemorative photos!
The 9-and-under racers line
up to get their racer portraits and scrapbook collage photos.
A sample of a collage photo is below on the right. |
|
Each
UtahMountainBiking.com team member who raced in UMB uniform during the 2008 season
received two 5x7 action photos with their name and the championship logo.
If you didn't get your photo at the BBQ, and no friend
or relative picked it up for you, it's waiting for you at the UMB shop.
That's 169 West Main in Lehi. Better call first to make sure the door's
unlocked.
If you don't pick it up, we'll stick it on the clipboard
we take to next season's races. Or you can send us a self-addressed stamped mailer.

Thanks to our 2007 teammate Chad Waldron for printing the racer action
photos and the team posters! |

This was an awesome
season due to the efforts and enthusiasm of many team racers. We set a new
ICup record of 1585 team points, winning 10 of 12 races against
competition that also broke previous point records this season. We had our
highest-ever number of season champions, putting 13 UMB racers on the
podium. We also broke the record for volunteer trailwork with over 250
hours.
Traditionally, we've had a single "Racer of the Year", but this
year, frankly, there were simply too many outstanding individuals. So this
year, we had multiple awards to acknowledge team members who were singled
out in the team vote for their leadership, enthusiasm, and contributions
to the team. |
Racer of the Year went to Jay Griffin for great racing performance
to win 1st in his division, team support, and racer coaching. |
Outstanding Junior Racer is Justin Griffin who raced above
his age category and still won the division.
|
Our Inspirational Racer is Derek Ransom for great skills
improvement, lots of trailwork, and positive attitude. |
Team "Key Workhorse" Joshua Peterson earned the highest
team point total at 78 and took the season 1st for his division.
|
We awarded three "Sparkplugs" -- racers who fired up the
gasoline of the entire team with their enthusiasm and hard
work. Jason made after-race BBQs a tradition. |
Jim Jackson is remembered for his special "raceday smile"
and positive attitude, his support of other racers, and
taking awesome photos of other racers.
|
Kendra Clark is a Sparkplug for her enthusiasm for group rides
and pre-rides, cheerleading, photos, and trailwork. Plus some
impressive racing. |
Ryan Allred was "Most Valuable off the Course" for
his mechanical services, skills teaching, help with the
team "base camp" at races, and burger-flipping.
|
And still more awards...
Danny Van Wagoner got the "Never Give Up" award, taking
2nd in his division despite 2 flat-tire finishes and 2 DNFs.
Catherine
Reay was voted "Critical Teammate" for fighting the big girls in
Sport Women to 2nd place.
Dale Hutchings got the "Attitude
Award" and Sally Hutchings the "Sunshine Award" for their
positive effect on their teammates' morale.
Workhorses who raced all 12
ICup events and also contributed significantly off-the-course were Brayden
Nielsen, John Van Wagoner, Shawn Nielsen, Zachary
Peterson, and Mike Engberson.
As a 12-race "workhorse" who showed great improvement
and finished as the top 9-and-under female, Mandy Clark was honored with
"Lady Lightning."
"Best Crash" went to Andrew Youngkin, immortalized by that
"bloody bike photo" in St.George, who finished the race before heading
to the hospital for stitches and a CAT
scan. |
|
Team photo poster: Each racer
at the BBQ also got one of these awesome team photo posters. The real thing is
18" x 12" in size, just right for hanging on the wall to
remember the 2008 season. If you'd like a poster, we have a few left
at the UMB shop (169 W Main in Lehi). The poster is also available in
larger sizes for a fee. Let us know if you're interested and we can get a
price quote. The IMBA and ICup trophies are also
at the store, should you want a photo of you holding the trophy. |
