Stan Crane Memorial, Draper -
May 28, 2008 On Monday May 26, torrential rains
saturated the course. For the first time in 15 years, an ICup race was
cancelled. Rescheduled for Wednesday evening, May 28, it was anybody's
guess who, and how many, would show up. The UMB team responded with a
great turnout. Distances for many groups were shortened and the award
ceremony took place in the chilly darkness. Jim Jackson,
Darren Stirland, Justin Griffin, and Joshua Peterson scored first-place wins. Second-place
finishers were Dylan Tanner, Rachel Hutchings, Danny Van Wagoner, Jeff
Gerke, and Bruce Argyle. Left:
At UMB HQ in the Equestrian Center parking lot, racers get ready to ride
on a course that will take them to the top of Corner Canyon. 1100 vertical
feet and 10.5 miles per lap. |
|
|
|
Joshua Peterson sprints away from
the
pack right away and keeps up the speed
to take another 1st place
win.
|
Shawn
Nielsen coasts into the downhill
turn at the lap/finish split, making a
fast ride to take 4th place.
|
Mandy Clark takes a hit from the water
tube on a downhill section of the race
loop and takes the 18th position.
|
Jaxon Van Wagoner (#954) raced his
way to the 8th place finish in 9-and-under. With 29 racers, this was the
biggest category of any group at the race. But Jaxon didn't have a UMB
team jersey on, so the shutter never snapped in his direction. |

Left: Zachary Peterson stands
and sprints as he
attacks the rider in front of him on the singletrack
Zach makes another great ride to get the 5th
place
spot.
Right: Brayden Nielsen
brings the bike back
down to earth as he races to take 9th place
in the 10-12 category.
|
|
|
Left: Rachel Hutchings gets
a little downhill
rest, but soon it's back to the climb as the
loop heads 1100 vertical feet up the slopes
of Corner Canyon. Rachel gets it done for
a 2nd
place finish.
Right: Monday
morning, Memorial Day.
Because of concerns about trail damage and
danger to racers on the slippery downhill,
the race is postponed until Wednesday. |
|
|
Left: Jake
Van Wagoner compresses as
the bike hits a speed bump. Jake makes
a great ride to get 4th place.
Right: Ryan
works on disc brakes. Don't know
how the team ever got onto the trail without
Ryan's help! |

Dylan Tanner fires into a short
uphill
section. 10 miles down, 1/2 mile to go
and he wins 2nd place. |
Skyler Hancock navigates the
tall grass
along Highland Drive as he sprints to
the finish line and 3rd place. |
New to the UMB team this week, Harris
Allan shows some speed as he grabs
the 4th place in this category. |
|
Left: In another strong performance,
Darren Stirland gets the 1st
place spot.
The best way to avoid comments on the
dirt-jumper's helmet and loud shorts in an
XC event: win.
Right: Andrew Youngkin heads
out strong
then trickles into the finish area after sunset
as a flat
tire knocks him to 8th place. |
|
|
|
|
Derek Ransom fights his way to 3rd
place in the newly speedier 30-39 category. |
Brandon Knotts is new to the team with
this race, and gets a great finish at 5th place.
|
Shane
Horton powers up the slope and
grabs the 6th place spot. |
|
Left: In his first start for UMB, Ryan Nielsen
finishes 10th. Ryan seems like an old hand on
the team, as he's accompanied our young Nielsen
racers to all 6 races this season. Right:
Dale Hutchings fires up the home stretch
to the finish line and 12th place. A little mud
on the legs, a lot of sweat on the brow. It's all
good. |
|
In the Beginner Men 40-plus category, UMB
swept the podium with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. New team members Jeff Gerke
and Brian Beck were on the podium in their first appearances as team
members. Congratulations! |
|
|
|
Jim Jackson has to
work a little harder
to stay ahead and get that 1st place finish. |
Jeff Gerke is a couple of
seconds behind,
powering to the 2nd place spot. |
Chasing hard is Brian Beck, just a
few seconds back at 3rd place. |
|
Left: Jason Sparks heads
over the bump on
the Bonneville Shoreline section of the uphill
climb and hangs in to get 8th
place. Right: In his
first appearance with UMB this
year, Brandon Balkman cranks his way
to 10th place. |
|
|
Left: Justin Griffin gives a
great effort to
grab the 1st place spot in his category.
Go Justin!Right: The
Beginner Men 30-39 category
heads out down the doubletrack shakeout
as they start their 10.5-mile loop. |
|
|
Left: Danny Van Wagoner fires
into a turn
on the home stretch as he drops off the
Spring Hollow trail at Highland, fighting
through to the 2nd
place position.Right: Ah,
wasn't that tunnel fun. Two-way
traffic, mud, water, and a rushing stream
next to your handlebar. It really seemed
a lot darker inside than this photo, though. |
|
|
Left: Catherine Reay heads up
the hill on
the way to the 9th place finish in the Sport
Women category.Right:
Coming through the stream and
sprinting into the tunnel. Your shoes are wet,
but you've got quite a few miles to dry off. |
|
|
Left: Ryan Van Wagoner gets
the 5th place
finish in Sport 19-29.Right: Coming
into the final finish-line
sprint. Who's that behind you? Are they
in your category, and are they attacking?
How much have you got left? |
|
|
Left: Dan Hutchings has a smile
for the camera
as he knows it's only another mile to the finish
line and 12th place.Right:
Gatorade, water, pop. Cookies
and carbs to reload after the race.
And not too far away, the tents of our
worthy adversaries, Revolution. |
|
|
|
|
Denmark Jensen gets the ribbon and
the team points with a 5th place finish. |
Greg Meyers cranks it home and
takes
the 10th place position.
|
Stephen Bergen fights to the 11th
place
spot in this tough category.
|
Jared Evans (#999) was back with the
team for this race, but didn't have a UMB jersey. So our photographers
missed Jared as he rode to 14th place.
|
|
Left: Jay Griffin takes some air for the camera
and grabs another great finish at 3rd place.
Right: Kris Nosack heads
up the Bonneville
Shoreline toward 14th place in this large
and competitive category.
|
|
At the Draper race, UMB set a new team
record for number of Expert-class riders participating. Yeah, it was just
3 expert riders. But still, it shows our young team is growing up! |
|
|
|
Todd Neumarker comes back from a
hamstring injury and cranks out a
4th
place finish. |
Almost finished with lap number one,
Mike Engberson exits the tunnel on

the rushing water of the creek as he
gets the 16th place spot. |
|
|
|
Jolene Nosack fights her way to take
another 4th place in Women 35-plus. |
Kendra Clark powers out of
the creek
water and heads for the tunnel and 5th place. |
Sally Hutchings gets a bit of
breeze and
rest on her way to the 6th place finish. |
|
Left: John Van Wagoner takes
air off the speed
bump and fights on to a team point at 7th place.Right: Brian
Oliver uses the team workstand
to make some last-minute shifting adjustments
before the race. |
|
|
Left: Bruce Argyle heads into the
stream before heading up the mountain, hanging in for 2nd place. This race is Revolution's own party, right in their back
yard. Our 40 racers scored well, but we were outgunned by Revolution's
60-plus competitors as they won the race 135 to 106. This, unfortunately
for us, is the highest total ever scored by a team in an Intermountain Cup
race under the current point system. They simply had more dogs in this
fight. But hey, wasn't it a great time? Nice trail, nice company, fun
race. More race photos are available at http://picasaweb.google.com/utahmb/StanCrane |
