Frozen Hog 2004:
The
Frozen Hog race on February 7 was "blessed" with 5 major
snowstorms within a week of the race. So it was deep, white, and cold. 50
racers competed, with the total crowd near 100. Racers included a tough
13-year old girl and a determined 12-year old boy. Every racer got a cool
t-shirt, featuring our frostbitten biking pig. |
Hillclimb competitors started by ability-level (Expert vs
Sport) and age-group. Competition was intense, with 14 racers in the Men's
Sport 18-29 and 15 in the Men's Sport 30-39.
Fastest time to the top was 28:10, posted by Cole Baldwin. Aaron Stites
was next-best at 28:18.
|
|
|
At the top, a tent, windbreak, propane heater, and a fire
kept riders warm while they cheered the later racers up the hill.
At the top, racers started individually, 30 seconds apart, for the Downhill
time trial event. Cole Baldwin burned the fastest time at 14:21,
with Aaron Stites again 2nd at 14:43. |
The snow at the top was so loose and deep that the 2004
Frozen Hog turned into an adventure race, with over half a mile of
hike-a-bike for even the strongest riders. But nobody voted to move the
finish line downhill. Every single racer in the Uphill event reached the summit -- a
particularly brutal proposition. Unbelievable that in a race this tough,
nobody gave up. |
|
|
The course offered spills galore, and the tales of glorious
wipeouts were many. If anybody says he rode the downhill without dumping
into the snow... well, he didn't make that claim in front of race witnesses
at the finish line.
Every '04 Hog
rider has the right to feel a little smug, a bit superior, a tad studly.
(Even the four lady riders have the right to feel, well, whatever the female
equivalent to "studly" is.) |
Overall best-time 1st through 3rd-place winners received a
$25 gift certificate and a pound of bacon. Category (age group) 1st
through 3rd-place winners received a nice big ribbon and merchandise gifts
courtesy of Timpanogos Cyclery of Pleasant Grove. But everybody won something -- we gave away over $700 in biking
stuff in the raffle -- from Revolution Mountain Sports of Sandy, and (of course)
UtahMountainBiking.com. |
