Five Mile Pass
West of Lehi - May 1, 2010

While sleet and snow pounded the Wasatch Front, Five Mile pass was dry and dusty on raceday morning. UMB turned out 44 racers. And while many other racers were seen hiking their flats back toward the start line, UMB had few mechanical disasters. The team scored another convincing win, with Justin Griffin, Mark Messer, and Jay Griffin taking 1st places, and Hattie Ransom, Ryan Anderson, Darren Harris, Jason Sparks, and Cat Finlayson getting 2nd place finishes.

Left:  Jon Hall hits the top of the dip and looks toward the next lap. The weather was cold, warm, bitter, calm, windy, snowy, rainy, sunny, cloudy, and every possible combination. It was a great day of racing.

Category 9-and-under:

Aiden Thayer is our top point-scorer in
the 9-and-under division, getting the 6th
place finish as he bounces over the rocks.

Hattie Ransom cranks her way past
the junipers to take 7th overall, and
2nd place among the girls.

Sawyer Ransom moves his small wheels
as he enters the downhill half of the race,
taking 8th after a couple of tumbles.

Category 10-12:

Joshua Peterson climbs the hill on the
12-and-under lap to finish on the podium
with the 3rd place position.

Hunter Ransom is bundled against the
chill as he completes his laps to take
team points at 5th place.

Harrison Woodard nears the top of
the first lap, finishing in the ribbons with
6th place in the 10-12 division.

David Ressa eyes the upcoming rocks
as he rides to the 9th place finish.

Maggie Ressa stands to get speed, taking
12th overall, and 3rd place girls.

Joseph Ressa picks his way through
the tricky rocks to take 13th place.

Beginner 13-15:  UMB had no Beginner 13-15 riders at this race!

Beginner 16-18:   UMB had no Beginner 16-18 riders at this race!

Beginner 19-29:

Left:  Ryan Anderson makes his first
appearance as a rider for the UMB team
and nails a nice 2nd place. Welcome Ryan!

Right:  As Bruce and Mike set up the team's
base camp in the morning gloom, the storm
clouds threaten. The temperature was 33
degrees at 8 am.

Beginner 30-39:

Left:  Another Ryan joins the team
for his first race at Five Mile Pass, as
Ryan Olsen sprints up and out of the
gully to take podium at 3rd place. Ryan
grinds an impressive 56-minute lap!

Right:  Surprisingly, the rain and snow of
the past three days had missed Five Mile
completely. The trail was dry and dusty.
We're looking at the Start/Finish area.
The race will go through the notch
between the two peaks.

Beginner 40-plus:

Left:  Bill Becker gets up over the handlebars as
he flies up the far side of the wash. Only 100 yards
to the finish line and a ribbon-worthy finish at 4th place.

Right:  Scott Robbins makes his first appearance as a UMB
team rider. Scott makes his race good for 5th place in
the Beginner Men 40-plus category.

Beginner Women:  UMB had no Beginner Women riders at this race!

Sport/Expert 13-15:

Left:  Zachary Peterson powers out of the dip as he
heads toward the finish line with a 4th place finish.

Right:  Dallin Johnson motors past the Lap/Finish split
to head out for the add-on 12-and-under loop. Dallin
had a flat in the wash that set him back over 1/2 hour,
but finished the race with 5th place.

Sport/Expert 16-18:

Left:  Justin Griffin heads to the right
of the Lap/Finish split to head out for
another long lap. Justin wins the Sport-
Expert 16-18 category with 1st place after
dealing with a loose skewer.

Right:  When the going gets tough, the
tough still find a way to keep going.
Joseph gets his bike up the last steep
spot on the hill.

Sport Men 19-29: UMB had no Sport Men 19-29 riders at this race!

Sport Men 30-34:

Jack Gage hits the crest of the wash
at the end of his first lap, finishing with
podium at 3rd place.

Dan Hutchings cranks north across the
sage flat on his 2nd lap, finishing the
race with 13th.

Ben Hutchings pops out of the wash
and eyes the Lap/Finish split. Another
big lap to go, with a 14th-place finish.

Sport Men 35-39:

Left:  Mark Messer gets low into the wind as he nears
the finish line, completing his two laps with 1st place.
Awesome job, Mark!

Right:  Darren Harris pivots the bike at the top of
the wash as he finishes his first lap. Darren nails
2nd place in the tough fast 35-39 category.

Mike Horne (the blue phantom) nears
the finish area with 7th place.

Jonathan Hall cranks out to his 2nd
lap on the way to a nice 9th place finish.

Ryan Nielsen pops over the top of the
wash on the way to taking 11th place.

Sport Men 40-plus:

Left:  Jason Sparks cranks toward the finish line
as he finishes with his highest-ever Sport placement
at 2nd place. Hard training is paying off.

Right:  Brian Ressa powers down as he hits the
top of the wash. One more lap to go, on the way
to a very respectable 8th place in this tough category.

Left:  Dale Hutchings smiles through the suffering
as he leaves "the pit" area to begin his second lap,
finishing the race in 14th place.

Right:  Dominic Bria heads the wrong direction -- back
toward the team canopy -- with his busted bike. Dom
snaps his chain on the next-to-last hill of the first
lap to take a DNF.

Sport Women:

Left:  Cat Finlayson hurries past the spectators on
the way out to lap #2. Cat grabs a sweet podium spot
with 2nd place for this race!

Right:  Colleen Tvorik hits the far side of the wash
as she finishes the first lap. Colleen takes the 4th
place ribbon for a long and tough 22 miles of riding.

Expert Men 19-29:  UMB had no Expert 19-29 riders at this race!

Expert Men 30-39:

finish against the fast guys.

Right:  Mike Engberson gets the bike moving into
lap number three, as he finishes with team points
at 7th place in Expert Men 30-39.

Left:  Brian Jeppson hits the edge of the wash in
his first lap, finishing just behind Mike at 8th place.

Right:  Nathan Drozd is heading through the Lap/Finish
area. Nathan blew up after two laps and didn't finish the
race.

Expert Men 40-plus:

Left:  Denmark Jensen shows off the 2010
team warmup jacket as he heads out for
another big lap. Denmark grabs team points
with 7th place in Expert Men 40-plus.

Right:  In the freakish weather, spectators
would appear, strip their coats, then run
shivering back to their cars. Here the crowd
has thinned as Jeff heads into his second
lap at Five Mile Pass.

Expert Women:

Left:  Chanda Jeppson is happy to finish
another lap. One more big lap to go, and
she'll finish with a ribbon at 5th place.

Right:  Jay, Jeff, and Justin hang near the
leaderboard as they discuss racing strategy
and training.

Singlespeed:

Left:  Shane Horton has hail bouncing off
his helmet as he heads into the "Finish"
lane at the end of his race, grabbing a
spot on the podium at 3rd place.

Right:  A brief rainstorm cleared just in time
to cook the hamburgers and hot dogs
while waiting for the award ceremony.
Team members brought delicious salads,
cookies, and fixin's for the meat.

Clydesdale:  UMB had no Clydesdale riders at this race!

wash at the end of the lap, finishing in the ribbons
with 6th place.

Men 50-plus:

Left:  Jay Griffin powers out of the wash at the
end of his first lap. Eleven more miles to go, on
the way to another convincing 1st place win
despite a flat tire.

Right:  Jeff Kingsford sprints across the sagebrush flat
as he finishes the second lap with the smell of podium
in the air. Jeff has a great finish at 3rd place in the Men
50-plus category.

Men 57-plus:

Joel Quinn pops out of the wash fighting
for the lead, but is knocked back to 4th
place with a leaky tire.

Gene Poncelet wears a few too many layers
and is almost missed by our photographers
on the way to 5th place.

Bruce Argyle cranks up the side of the
wash on the way to a 6th place ribbon.

A lot of racers stayed home from Five Mile Pass because the weather looked nasty. Not UtahMountainBiking! Our riders showed up and gave it their best, to come away with a team victory that puts us solidly in the lead for the 2010 Intermountain Cup Team Championship. To our new riders, Welcome and congratulations! And to our veterans: You've shown why we're a team to be loved, and a team to be feared! But there are still 10 races to go. Let's have fun and get faster.

Hard work paying off. Jay takes the #1 spot on the podium,
with Jeff at 3rd place. Meantime, rival Mad Dogs nip at
the team's heels at 2nd and 4th.

In another team showdown, Mark takes 1st place, with
Darren at 2nd. Mad Dog riders hit the 3rd and 4th
finishing positions. It's going to be a great competition!
